SMEi Services Ltd is a privately owned, Christchurch based company that was set up in New Zealand by Michael Shield and Robert Loughnan, to review and develop investment opportunities for the United Kingdom based investors that Michael represents.
Michael and Robert provide advice to New Zealand businesses on how to develop, secure and protect their intellectual property assets before bringing in investors or venture capital providers or before those businesses attempt to sell their products or services internationally. Both Michael and Robert are extremely experienced in the field of product development, commercialisation and international marketing.
The company offers New Zealand holders of intellectual property rights a competitive insurance package. All insurance cover is arranged through HSBC Insurance Brokers Ltd who place it with a network of Lloyd’s underwriting syndicates. The syndicates are bonded to underwrite insurance in New Zealand.
When insurance is needed
Most Intellectual Property owners will need insurance for they will not have the cash reserves or spare cash to protect their intellectual property rights. This insurance cover will provide funding for enforcing the rights of the owner of the insured intellectual property.
How we cover you
Insurance will be offered to New Zealand resident Intellectual Property Right holders who complete a Proposal that must be signed and returned to our office along with copies of the IPONZ (Intellectual Property Office of New Zealand) documents showing the Patent Application, Patent, Trademark or Plant Variety Right number. These documents will then be forwarded to our Lloyd’s Insurance Broker in London who will confer with the underwriters and make an offer to insure. Click here to go to the contacts page where you can register and download a proposal form.
Cover can be provided at the (Provisional) Patent Applicant stage and if this cover is taken out it before the patent is granted it allows the patent holder to purchase Intellectual Property Rights Enforcement Insurance as soon as the patent has been granted. It will also cover the costs of accelerating the patent application to grant.
The Intellectual Property Rights Insurance contract that we offer is a low cost policy giving all the protection of a full cost contract of insurance. An initial low deposit premium would be paid on the understanding that an additional top up premium would be paid only if it becomes necessary to go to court some time in the future.
Those taking out insurance have the option of having the details of their insured intellectual property placed in a Register of Insured Intellectual Property that is maintained by Lloyd’s.
